Project Description
This is not the pond near the clubhouse. The pond near the clubhouse is currently being rehabilitated. The large pond is about a ? mile walk from the clubhouse. Park at the club house, cross over to the equipment shed and hike down the path past the chucker cage. There is a trail that passes through the “Cathedral of Pines”. This is the eastern leg of the “Nature Trail Loop” which can be found on the trail map trail map on the club website.
The large pond has bass and bluegill. There are a lot of bluegill in this pond from 3” to 6”, but there are also 3 pound bass, so you never know what you’re going to catch. The ponds on the farm are currently managed as catch and release, so please throw those fish back so they can be caught again.
Take everything you need with you. A trip back to the car is a major tiring and time consuming event.
Fish in spring or early summer if possible. From mid October to late April, the fish are much less active due to the cold weather. In late July, the weeds start to grow heavy in the pond which makes fishing more difficult, since it is hard to find open water to put your worm in.
Fish in the morning or evening. As the weather warms, mid-day gets hot. Kids get prone to sunburn and the fish take a siesta. As shadows start to touch the edge of the water, the fishing gets better. While the weather is cool, midday fishing may be better, since the fish get more active with the warmth.
When starting, fish the south side of the lake from between peninsula and the dam. This area has the easiest access and less chance of falling in. In addition, it has a great population of bluegill. The section upstream (west) of the peninsula is very shallow and is harder to fish.
Don’t feel that you need to cast out more than 20 ft. There are plenty of fish 3-10ft from the shoreline.
If the fish aren’t biting, change the depth of the hook and remove any weeds. If the fish aren’t biting right where you are, it’s ok to move. Sometimes fish are biting in one area and not in others. If you try an area for 5 minutes and nothing is happening, move to a different spot. It’s O.K. But there are fish almost everywhere.
Have fun, explore other things, leave if the kids get bored. This is supposed to be enjoyable for everyone. See if there are chuckers or ducks in the bird pen on the way in. Look for deer tracks.
Don’t expect to get any fishing done yourself. Casting, baiting hooks, and taking fish off the hook can be a full time job.
ENJOY!!!
