Trail Parking
When hiking at the Chapter there are three popular areas to park, as outlined below. In addition to the Chapter House lot, two of these areas are off-road and behind locked Farm Gates. Generally speaking driving on Chapter grounds is strictly prohibited. An exception to this rule is that vehicles are permitted to drive off-road (weather permitting) into the southern portion of the A3 field and also the parking lot behind Gate F. Please close and lock Gates E ad F behind you.

Chapter House parking lot

The Chapter house parking lot is a gravel lot at the end of a paved driveway. That makes it accessible to all sorts of vehicles during most weather conditions. The Log Cabin is a short hike from here. Plus three trailheads are nearby:

a) The pathway to the Cathedral of the Pines and the Big Pond (a Farm Road begins north of the equipment storage area)

b) The Joseph Fitzwater Conservation Nature Trail (Northeast of the parking lot). This trail connect to the West Woods trail network before continuing to the Big Pond.

c) The shortcut through the R&P parking area continues to Clearing A.

A3 Field - behind Gate E

Park here to reach the Campground and trails beyond. Avoid driving in the same tracks as other vehicles so as to limit soil compaction. In addition to hiking to the Campground this is a good jumping-off point to explore the A2 Field and the A4 Field. Plus the Apiary and Chestnut Orchard are nearby. Gate E can be opened with the gate padlock key or with a combination received when registering to use the Campground (for approved outside groups). You may park on the South side of the large grassy field. About 100 yards into the field a sign reads “Do not proceed beyond this sign”. Beyond the sign is a steep slope with a marshy area where vehicles will likely get stuck. About 75 yards down the slope from the parking area is the campground bulletin board, water pump (not drinking water), and a wooden bridge marking the entrance to the campground.

Note: An experimental meadow is now located on the Northern side of the A3 Field. Vehicles are prohibited from driving in that meadow.

Small parking area behind Gate F

Near the bend in Willard Road is a small off-road parking area behind Gate F. This gate can only be opened with the gate padlock key. This parking area is a great place to reach the trails in the North East Woods.
