Save Our Streams Program
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chapter is proud to participate in the Save Our Streams (SOS) program, a national effort that began in the 1960s. Chapter volunteers regularly monitor nearby creeks and tributaries, collecting samples and identifying aquatic insects whose presence reflects overall water quality. These organisms serve as natural indicators of pollution and stream health, offering insights that chemical tests alone cannot provide.

Equally important, SOS is a teaching tool. By engaging youth, students, and community groups, our Chapter demonstrates how runoff, erosion, and development affect streams. Through this hands-on science, we carry forward a proud tradition of citizen-led conservation and stewardship of clean water.
