Hiking at the Chapter
Step into more than 600 acres of forests, fields, and ponds, and you’ll quickly see why hiking is one of the most rewarding ways to enjoy our Chapter. From open meadows with wide, sunny paths which are perfect for spotting deer or migrating birds, to well-established woodland trails shaded by oaks, hickories, and pines, there’s something here for everyone. Our trail system is extensive and well-marked, offering options for every mood: quiet family strolls, birdwatching walks, or more adventurous treks that carry you deeper into the West and Northeast Woods for a wilder experience. Want a guided tour, join one of our interpretive walk in the woods, and learn not just about the trails, but also wildlife conservation.
Hiking on Chapter grounds is not only exercise; it is also a way to reflect, observe nature, and connect with conservation in action. Seasonal changes and the diversity across our farm, bring new beauty to the land, from spring wildflowers to the brilliant colors of fall. With so many miles of accessible trails, members can return again and again and always find something new.
Of course, the Chapter is only one part of Maryland’s rich hiking landscape. Members often venture to nearby trail systems such as the C&O Canal Towpath, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Seneca Creek State Park—all within easy reach. For those seeking a longer challenge, Maryland also hosts 40 miles of the Appalachian Trail, offering breathtaking vistas from South Mountain, historic overlooks at Washington Monument State Park, and rugged terrain that tests stamina and rewards with sweeping views of the Potomac River Valley.
Whether close to home or further afield, hiking connects us to the land, strengthens our bodies, and restores our minds.
Trailheads near the Chapter House provide access to the West Woods and the Big Pond. Hikers going to the Campground often park in the A3 Field. The closest parking area to the North East Woods is behind Gate F. For a complete description of parking options and rules see Trail Parking. All trails are for hiking only—no motorized vehicles are allowed beyond designated farm roads.
Take your time, follow the map, and enjoy the peace of exploring one of Montgomery County’s truly special conservation landscapes.
